When the engine started making a very clear and loud TICK TICK TICK, I knew exactly what it was. So instead of paying someone, I decided to roll up my sleeves and fix it myself.
The wobbling and clunking was bad. The entire van would wobble when it shifted into a gear while moving or sitting still. Replacing the mounts is a big job, but with some patience, and safety precautions, you can do it!
Within 2 weeks, after all of that work, the motor mounts failed! Uhg! Buy OEM!
The Pop Up is kind of heavy but the van does well until I’m driving up long New England mountain climbs in the summer, and then the transmission gets hot. Really hot! Which starts to overheat the engine.
The Pop Up pushes the back of the van down a little too much. Time to install some helpers. The budget airbags should work just fine.
After installing, we definitely have to test it out! This is the Airlift 1000 towing review.
I love the ride airbags provide while towing. But after 1 year in the Vermont environment, these airbags had some issues.
I have been towing extremely heavy loads with this Grand Caravan. I should have changed the fluid earlier. Maybe? But I’m doing it now. I’m curious to see how ugly it is inside.
63K miles after the initial transmission fluid change and things started to get bad. The engine is stalling at idle, and it feels like the transmission is locking up. Not good. This could be it.
I have never considered that an automatic transmisison could cause a rough idle, or worse, a stalling issue. And yet this is where I’m at. This little electronic doo-dad fixed it.
Lots of sqeaky sqeaky. Due to a broken splash shield that exposed the belt to the harsh winter elements, its time for a new belt.
The back of the van needed more stability and lift while towing, so I tried these “booster shocks”.
Now that I’m using a weight distribution hitch, I no longer need the Monroe Load Levelers so I’m going back to a quality KYB rear shock.
Chasing down a bad clunk in the back of the van, and I found bad shock bushings, but a snapped coil spring?
The Weight Distribution Hitch is a game changer. Towing has become a joy!
The time came to replace my well used KYB struts with a new set of KYB struts!
I noticed at night the headlights were very dim. Both lamps had a lot of condensation inside. The fix? Buy new ones from Amazon and install ’em!
When you’re going straight and you turn the wheel every so gently and the front hub growls. That’s when its time for a new hub.
I was quoted $1000 for this job! No thanks! I did it at home for much much less.
The clunk suggested something was wrong. Further inspection proved the CV axles needed to be replaced.
On the Grand Caravan, “clunks” define the repair! In this case, at 140k miles, tie rods and end links.
Rust in Vermont makes everything harder! But with the right leverage, you can move anything :D
I can’t stand squealing! I’ve done everything else, I’m gonna replace this thing. Ugly job, but it has to be done.
Make sure your power steering resevoir doesn’t have a clogged filter! If so, time for a new one. They’re cheap!
Not overheating, but not getting warm enough! Most likely this thing was stuck wide open.
